Here is a collection of miniatures sources for GI Joe’s Cobra forces. More photographs and links will be added as I evaluate new products and rethink old proxies.
A number of designers and artist (to include myself) have created miniatures of various scales. This page explores only those of 15mm and aircraft of 1/144 scale. If interested in another gaming scale (such as 28mm or 1/144), look up the designers named herein on Shapeways.com.
Note: I have checked out most of the models listed here, but a few are still untested.
- (9/9/18) Catastrophe. Rick (Scarapis) has pretty much closed down his Cobra/Joe items. That said, he might still sell the files separately. Scarapis [Rick’s Store]
- I have begun 3d design. With the help of TinkerCAD, I have been able to create a few of the models lacking availability. I have included my own designs as well as those of others below.
HIGH SPEED SENTRY (HISS)
Cobra H.I.S.S. Tank – Designed by Arctic Skunk at Shapeways.com [My HISS Tank Platoon] The turret has a well which allows both 360º rotation and placement of miniatures. The barrels, however, are a bit thin for being 90mm and sit too low for my tastes. That said, the GI Joe: Battle Files booklet states the HISS has twin 30mm cannons which are along the lines of the Bradley Fighting Vehicle.
Cobra HISS Tank (1/144 scale) (Designed by C.O.B. Constructs and Miniatures) Although available in cheaper material, be certain to buy the Smooth Fine Detail Plastic version. The cheaper material is horrible.
CRIMSON ATTACK TANK (CAT)
Cobra Crimson Attack Tank (C.A.T.) – (Unavailable) Designed by Scarapis (Rick’s Store] at Shapeways.com Here is a CAT (also, since it is identical, the GI Joe MOBAT) I’ve modified slightly to outfit with some stowage detail.
ASSAULT SYSTEM POD (ASP)
Although intended for anti-aircraft, ASP are also used for anti-personnel as well.
Cobra A.S.P. (posable guns, turret, and hull) – [Above] This is my own design built from scratch. It took about 24 hours to draw it in TinkerCAD. Very cool program/website. Here is a link to the toy inspiring this design — COBRA ASP.
Cobra A.S.P. (w/Posable Guns) – [Above Left] Designed by Scarapis [Rick’s Store] at Shapways.com This new design allows the angling of the guns for anti-aircraft use. Cobra A.S.P. (w/Stationary Guns) – [Above Right] Designed by Scarapis [Rick’s Store] at Shapways.com
COBRA Stinger/Rattler 4WD – Designed by Scarapis [Rick’s Store] at Shapways.com
Cobra Heetseek Missile System – Designed by Fleeting Interests at Shapways.com
(Above) A computer rendering of my own design inspired by the Heetseek missile.
(Right) Here’s a pic of the unpainted model. I replaced the old proxy with my own design.
(Below) A pic of the unpainted model on the old base. The replaced proxy is to the right of the base.
Cobra C.L.A.W. (Glider/Drone) – Designed by Orbital Games at Shapeways.com
Various Missiles – designed by SNAFU Store at Shapeways.com To aid in sculpting models, I am in the market from some missiles. I bought some 1/300 scale (6mm), but they proved too small. This link is for 1/200 scale which should be exactly what I need for modeling my own vehicles.
FULLY ARMED NEGATOR GYROCOPTER (FANG)
Cobra F.A.N.G. Helicopter – Designed by Arctic Skunk at Shapeways.com
MAMBA (HEAVY ATTACK HELICOPTER)
Cobra Mamba — ANother one of my own designs. I could not find any others so I wasted a few days throwing thi together on TinkerCAD. THe end result is close enough for my own use, but people will probably want something more refined for the size of the price tag on this thing.
Here’s the item as received from Shapeways. A bit of discoloration which will be painted over and the rotors will be glued after the model is painted.
In-game Aircraft: Helicopters/VTOL are 15mm (1/100) scale while larger/non-VTOL aircraft are 1/144 scale.
Cobra Rattler (VTOL Aircraft) (1:100 scale) — Designed by Scarapis at Rick’s Store on Shapeways.com
Overall, it is a really good representation of the Cobra toy model. The plastic is solid and requires very sharp razor knives and hand vise (hand drill) to work the surface. I used a fine tooth hobby saw to remove the canopy. Any other tools do not work very well on this material. It seems to take super glue without a problem.
“Rattler” (proxying an A-10 Aircraft) – A classic and easily built A-10 is the 1/144 scale [TUBX06 A-10 Warthog Fighter Flight] from Battlefront Miniatures makers of Flames of War. It is essentially two pieces and a couple of trim pieces. An alternative might be
from TSS QRF Line.
Conquest X-30 (1/144 scale) – Designed by Direwolf’s Depot at Shapeways.com Used by the Cobra Python Patrol.
Cobra SNAKE (Proxy) – Khurasan Miniatures
Cobra The Enemy (blue uniforms) – Eureka Miniatures Modern Russians. THese models have winter coats.
Cobra Tech Vipers – Khurasan Miniatures’s: FEDERAL SET 5 15mm Humans in Body Armour with Midtech Weapons, Recon/Drone Controllers (team of three) [My Tech Viper]
Cobra Viper Troops – Khurasan Miniatures: Mid-Tech Humans in Full (Carapace) Body Armour
Cobra Crimson Guard – Rebel Miniatures: Earth Force Red Guard. Another alternative product line is the Laserburn 15mm Imperial Troops
Bikers – Rebel Miniatures 15mm Biker Gang (on Motorcycles)
Dreaknok Air Assault – Designed by Arctic Skunk at Shapeways.com Although used primarily by GI Joe forces, the VTOL was also used by the Dreadnoks with only color variation.
